At the age of 67, Mr. N.D.D. was diagnosed with cancer in the lower throat and upper esophagus area. This type of cancer can be difficult to treat if discovered late. It was also the second time he had faced cancer, after being treated for laryngeal (voice box) cancer with surgery and radiation therapy more than 10 years ago. 

Given the patient’s history of cancer, advanced age, and the need to preserve the function of the throat and upper esophagus, selecting an optimal treatment approach was crucial. Following a multidisciplinary consultation, physicians at Hoan My Da Nang Hospital decided to perform Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD) – an advanced minimally invasive technique for the treatment of early-stage cancers. 

ESD – A Modern Method for Treating Early Gastrointestinal Cancer 

ESD (Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection) is an advanced endoscopic technique that enables physicians to remove early-stage tumors located within the mucosal layer of the gastrointestinal tract. Using a flexible endoscope inserted through the mouth, doctors can precisely dissect and remove abnormal tissue from the esophagus, stomach, or intestines without the need for open surgery. 

This method offers several benefits: 

  • Minimally invasive, avoiding open surgery 
  • Preservation of normal gastrointestinal structure and function

One Procedure – Removal of Two Cancerous Lesions 

During the endoscopic examination, doctors discovered one cancerous lesion in the lower throat and one precancerous lesion in the upper esophagus (an early abnormal change that could develop into cancer). After confirming through CT scans that the disease had not spread deeper or to other organs, the medical team decided to remove both lesions using the ESD technique in a single procedure. 

The procedure was performed safely and precisely. Follow-up results showed: 

  • The treated area healed well 
  • PET-CT scans showed no remaining cancer cells or signs of spread 

Mr. N.D.D. has now fully recovered and returned to his normal daily life, with no complications after treatment – marking his second victory over cancer at the age of 67.
