Rectal Endoscopy and What You Need to Know

18/09/2024

Rectal endoscopy is a procedure that allows  the endoscopist to directly examine the inside of the rectum and part of the sigmoid colon (pelvic colon) using a small flexible endoscope with a diameter of about 1 cm, inserted through the anus.  Through the images on the endoscopy machine, doctors can see, classify the level of damage, and accurately diagnose the appropriate treatment methods as well as directly intervene in the damage.

Why Undergo Rectal Endoscopy?

Although the rectum is a short segment, it is the site of many colon-related conditions, making its examination very important. Endoscopy is one of the most accurate methods for diagnosing gastrointestinal diseases. Additionally, through endoscopy, doctors can biopsy lesions to diagnose cancer, stop bleeding from bleeding lesions, or remove polyps (small growths that may develop into cancer). Other methods cannot accomplish these tasks.

Preparation for Rectal Endoscopy

Most medications can be taken before rectal endoscopy. However, you should inform your doctor about the medications you are currently taking, such as aspirin, arthritis medications, blood thinners, insulin, or iron supplements.

Before the endoscopy, the rectum must be thoroughly cleaned to ensure the procedure is quick, minimally painful, accurate, and to reduce the risk of complications.

Rectal Endoscopy Procedure

Before the endoscopy, the doctor will perform an anal examination to detect any lower lesions if present. The patient will lie on their left side, and the endoscope will be inserted through the anus, gradually advancing into the rectum and part of the sigmoid colon for observation. The patient may experience discomfort or bloating due to air being pumped in or the endoscope stretching the abdomen. Any lesions will be noted during the procedure, and techniques such as biopsy, polyp removal, or hemostasis will be performed if necessary. The rectal endoscopy procedure lasts approximately 5 to 15 minutes.

When is Rectal Endoscopy Necessary?

Rectal endoscopy is indicated in the following cases:

Suspected abnormalities in the lower gastrointestinal tract.

Performing therapeutic interventions such as rectal polyp removal or hemostasis.

Screening for lower gastrointestinal cancers, aiming for early detection and timely treatment.

Post-Endoscopy Considerations

A feeling of bloating and gas may occur but will subside after a short period. Be mindful to detect early signs of possible complications such as fever, severe abdominal pain, or blood in the stool. If a biopsy is performed, remember to collect the biopsy results and continue follow-up as directed by your doctor.
