Successful Removal of Fungal Sinus Infection in a Patient with Multiple Underlying Conditions

Doctors at Hoan My Minh Hai Hospital have successfully performed surgery to treat fungal sinusitis for patient T.T.K (73 years old, residing in Khanh Binh Dong Commune, Tran Van Thoi District, Ca Mau Province). This was a particularly complex case as the patient had a history of multiple cardiovascular conditions and had undergone treatment at several facilities without improvement.
Mrs. K. was admitted to Hoan My Minh Hai Hospital with long-standing symptoms including headache, facial heaviness, shortness of breath, and persistent pain and pressure around the eye socket. Despite receiving treatment at various hospitals, her condition did not improve, significantly affecting her daily life and overall health.
In addition to chronic sinusitis, the patient also suffered from cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, heart valve regurgitation, and myocardial ischemia – all of which are high-risk underlying conditions requiring extreme caution during treatment, especially anesthesia and surgery.
After examination, the patient was diagnosed with multiple ENT disorders, including right maxillary fungal sinusitis, ethmoid sinusitis, inferior turbinate hypertrophy, and deviated nasal septum. Fungal sinusitis in particular requires timely intervention. Without treatment, the fungus may continue to grow, destroy the sinus bones, and spread to nearby areas such as the eyes and brain, leading to extremely serious complications including vision loss, blindness, meningitis, brain abscess, and even life-threatening conditions.
The medical team performed a complex endoscopic surgery, including maxillary and ethmoid sinus opening, middle turbinate resection, and nasal septum correction. The entire procedure was carried out with great caution to ensure maximum safety due to the patient’s multiple underlying diseases.
One day after surgery, the patient experienced a significant reduction in facial heaviness as the fungal mass had been completely removed. With positive recovery progress, she was discharged after three days.
At her follow-up visit one week later, Mrs. K.’s symptoms of nasal congestion, runny nose, and facial pain had improved markedly. Her blood pressure was stable, appetite had returned, and her overall health condition had recovered well.
According to Dr. CKI Trang Thuy Lieu, ENT specialist at Hoan My Minh Hai Hospital: “This was a complex case because the patient was elderly and had multiple cardiovascular conditions that required strict monitoring. However, thanks to the close coordination of the medical team, the surgery went smoothly and successfully, significantly improving the patient’s quality of life.”
The doctor also advised that people should not underestimate persistent symptoms such as headache, nasal congestion, and facial heaviness. Early examination at facilities with ENT specialists, combined with nasal endoscopy or sinus CT scans when symptoms appear, can help detect the disease early, allow timely treatment, and prevent complications.
Endoscopic surgery is currently considered the optimal method for treating nasal and sinus diseases, thanks to its minimally invasive nature, reduced postoperative pain, and faster recovery for patients.
